What is a House Dust Mite and how does it cause allergic reactions?
A House Dust Mite is blind and is approximately 300 microns in size. It thrives in warm humid conditions of 15°C to 35°C and although it leads a relatively short life, just three
to four months, the female mite lays on average 150 eggs.
In order to live and breed a House Dust Mite must feed on sloughed human skin cells which have to be pre digested by the action of a fungus to provide the necessary nutrition.
Mites do not bite however they do excrete faeces which are up to 50 microns in diameter which dry out and break into smaller pieces which then float in the air. To put this in to prospective the diameter a human hair is 40 to 120 microns. The bacteria found inside the gut of the mite is a known human allergen (Der p1) and this can be found in their faeces.
Humans inhale the tiny particles of airborne House Dust Mite faeces and this triggers Asthma, Rhinitis and Eczema. These illnesses have shown a four fold increase in the last twenty years as central heating has become more popular.
The British Medical Association attributes 70% of Asthma cases to the House Dust Mite.
What can you do to combat the House Dust Mite?
You can not prevent your skin cells from falling off during the night, this is important for the health of your skin, however if human skin cells are not pre digested by fungi, such as Aspergillus Repens, then they are too fatty, lacking in vitamin B and with a keratin content that is too high to provide a proper source of nutrition for House Dust Mites.
Your best course of action is to find anti allergy bedding that prevents the growth of bacteria and fungi depriving the mites of their food source.
How does Fogarty Ultra Care bedding work?
The Fogarty Ultra Care anti allergy range uses a fabric with an anti bacterial anti fungal coating which prevents the growth of Aspergillus Repens and with out this fungus the House Dust Mite can not pre digest it’s meal of human skin cells. This will starve the mite to the point where it either dies or leaves the bed but most importantly with out the means to feed mites don’t excrete and therefore can not produce allergens.
What is the Ultra Care fibre?
Fogarty Ultra Care range has a surface coating of an anti bacterial anti fungal material which has a proven track record in American hospitals (over the last thirty plus years).
The coating is not a poison. It does not kill House Dust Mites and is non toxic to humans.
Once treated with the non toxic Ultra Care coating the fibres keep their freshness regardless of how often they are washed. The treatment will not leach out in to the air or in to water and is therefore not harmful to the person sleeping in the bed or to the environment.
The coating prevents the growth of bacteria on the surface of the treated item however it does not kill bacteria on the skin of a person using the bed which is important as some strains of bacteria are a necessary part of a healthy life.
Some bacteria and fungi are responsible for unpleasant odours and staining however the Ultra Care treatment is anti bacterial and anti fungal therefore combating nasty niffs.
What reassurance do I have that the Fogarty Ultra Care anti allergy bedding range is safe?
Fogarty has rigorously tested it’s Ultra Care range and has achieved accreditation from both the European Environment Agency “Oeko-Tex” and the independent charity Allergy Uk who’s Seal Of Approval symbol is displayed on the Fogarty Ultra Care packaging.
